Empty cruise liners create business opportunities

Support services for passenger liners have been thrown a lifeline by the government’s decision to allow Walvis Bay and Lüderitz Bay to accommodate empty vessels.

Many of the vessels are unable to sail to their ports of origin as the movement of essential cargo has taken precedence.

“While carefully studying the risks involved, we have concluded that “empty” passenger ships can indeed call our ports at our large offshore anchorages for the purposes of temporary lay-up and/or taking on fuel and provisions,” says Namport acting chief executive officer Kavin Harry.

The passenger vessels are allowed to have a minimum crew complement on-board, and no passengers.

All Covid-19 mitigation measures by the Ministry of Health and Namport are implemented when dealing with the vessels at anchorage.
