IMPORTERS OF electrical goods will need new letters of authority from the SABS (SA Bureau of Standards) on July 1.
The bureau is currently re-issuing all the existing l.o.a.'s - which will expire on June 30 - with the new permits now having a one-year validity.
It is the responsibility of the holders of these letters, says the bureau, to apply for new ones before the end of June. The re-issue is free, but only if the applicant has already registered with the SABS, and can provide proof of payment of the relevant compulsory levies.
All electrical goods brought into this country must comply with SABS specifications. The bureau currently charges R200 for evaluating the test report for a product. Each specific model must have its own l.o.a., and the SABS charges a R150 fee for each model an importer registers.
