EL weathers the storm

Winds gusting at up to 110km an hour last Friday (September 26) not only brought operations at the Port of East London to a halt but resulted in several stacked containers being blown over. However, by Saturday afternoon the situation was back to normal, according to a port spokesman. When FTW contacted the port on Monday morning, it was back in full operation. While a few boxes suffered slight damage, it was not extensive, he told FTW, since most of the affected boxes were empties. An investigation into the incident, which caused no injuries, is under way. The region has been particularly hard hit by severe weather conditions recently. Fierce storms in the Western Cape last month resulted in major delays at the Cape Town Container Terminal. Combined with power outages and equipment breakdowns, it caused delays of up to 156 hours at the time.
