Durban port responds well to emergencies

KEVIN MAYHEW THE PORT of Durban rates well in terms of its ability to respond to incidents in the view of Garth Huggins of marine insurance assessors Rennie Marine & Co. And this includes hazardous goods. “We assess a range of problems such as fires in warehouses, flooding, road accidents and the like, and Durban has a good ability to cope with crises such as these,” he said. “There is also good response in general from the Metro Emergency Services and independent hazardous materials handling companies.” While there have been incidences of cargo damage and theft in the port during the last year, these were overshadowed by a derailment and marine incidents which did not occur in the port.
