Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has for the first time ever appointed a woman to head up port security at the Port of Durban.

TNPA announced on Monday that it had appointed Sinazo Tiya as port security officer (PSO), a role which is crucial to ensure the safety and security of TNPA assets, people and port, in compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code.

Tiya has over 10 years of experience in the protection industry, having joined TNPA in 2019 as a security supervisor for the Port of Durban’s Maydon Wharf precinct.

Prior to joining TNPA, Tiya was a police officer in the South African Police Services in Cape Town, where her passion for serving and protecting was ignited.

As the PSO, her security mandate also extends to port access control, minimising congestion in the port vicinity, monitoring compliance and ensuring adherence to security operational policy and legislation through regular audits.

Tiya holds a National Diploma in Policing, a forensic investigation certificate, an NQF5 in Policing, a PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) grade A and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Policing Practice.

As the first female at the helm of security in the port, she is aware of the legacy she will leave for women in the industry and hopes to be a positive role model.
