Durban harbourmaster resigns

Terry Hutson AFTER A stay in the port for just on a year, Durban’s harbourmaster Sanjiv Tandon has resigned and will leave office within the next month. Tandon arrived in the port in May last year from Port Elizabeth where he was harbourmaster. Prior to that he served with the NPA Marine Department as a marine pilot in the port of Richards Bay from 1995, and before that he was a ship’s master at sea. When he arrived in Durban it was to fill a post that had stood vacant for 18 months following the sudden departure of Captain Derek Cooke. A spokesperson for the NPA head office said he could not comment on Tandon’s resignation and he was not aware that he had resigned. A Durban NPA source did however confirm the report and said Tandon was returning to his native India where he has family. The vacancy comes just as the ISPS Code nears its implementation day, for which the harbourmaster holds ultimate responsibility. The acting deputy harbourmaster in Durban is Captain Sanjoy Sen. There is no confirmation of a new appointment.
