THE NEW MILLENNIUM tower is now a landmark in Durban and already visible from all corners of the city and some distance out to sea. Ir was designed by the young firm of Soundspacedesign after a competition was held among KZN architects, and was chosen because of its innovative features as well as functionality. Protekon was the project manager and
oversaw its construction.
Apart from housing the entire NPA port control personnel, the Millennium Tower has incorporated a number of special features, which NPA describes as its 'gift to the city.' These serve to remind people that Durban owes its existence to the port and sea.
When fully operational in about two months time the tower will indicate the state of the tides, including whether the tide is incoming or outgoing, and also wind direction. At night the cowl on top of the building will be lit up with bright coloured lights and be visible for miles around.
The 72m tall tower, by itself as large as the Statue of Liberty without its pedestal, also houses a search and rescue centre and provides port control officers on duty with a perfect 360 degree visibility for the first time, as well as the best view in Durban!
