Durban-Gauteng freight hub breaks ground

Construction activity is under way at the R10 billion Insimbi Ridge Development in Cato Ridge, with heavy equipment already on site, according to the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG).

The update formed part of a broader progress report on infrastructure and investment projects in eThekwini, where the PeWG said cranes and other yellow plant were already operating at the site.

The development was launched in November last year by Assore SA PropCo and Rail Development Corporation (RDC) as part of a planned logistics precinct on the Durban-Gauteng corridor.

At the launch, the developers said the project would provide inland staging, warehousing and intermodal freight capacity aimed at supporting cargo flows between Durban and inland markets. They also said the precinct would connect to the national rail network through a proposed private siding linking the development to Cato Ridge Station.

The development was intended to integrate road, rail and port infrastructure within a single logistics node, said RDC project lead Sibusisiwe Nodada.

Developers previously said Phase 1 would include about 33 000 m² of logistics and industrial facilities, including an anchor cold-storage and warehousing facility for logistics operator FPT Group. The wider precinct covers about 500 hectares and has been identified by provincial and municipal authorities as a catalytic development along the Durban-Gauteng freight corridor.

Developers have indicated that operations are expected to commence in 2027.
