MARKING A milestone development in its progress towards improved capacity and efficiency, Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has awarded Dredging International Group the contract for maintenance dredging of the Maputo Port access channel. The company will restore the 100 m wide channel to its design depth of -9.4 m. “When the depth and width of the Polana and Xefina channels are fully restored, deep-draft bulk carriers will be able to enter the port by day and night through the access channel at most stages of the tide,” said operations director Ken Shirley. Work is expected to begin this month and be completed by early February 2004.
