Diversity is the name of the game for Gojo

A SURPRISING diversity of goods from an equally diverse roster of clients is moving by air nowadays, says Gojo Cargo managing director Joao Mesquita. The Johannesburg-based clearing and forwarding company’s shipping volumes any given week may vary from 40% air shipments and 60% sea shipments to an even 50/50 split. “We do a lot of volume by air. Bulky items like garments are not usually moved by air, but a large shipment of T-shirts was required pronto in Angola. The recipient could not wait for the goods to make their way through the congestion at the port of Luanda. “They were promotional items for one of the political parties in the elections,” said Mesquita. Also moving to Angola by air are medicines, merchandise and furniture. Machinery and furniture are key items shipped on regular flights from Johannesburg to Pemba in northern Mozambique, where SA investment has meant steadily increasing volumes. “However, we don’t only ship from South Africa,” says Mesquita, “but around the world to Nigeria for multinationals such as Procter & Gamble, and Reckit Benckiser.” Exports of machinery from China to Congo move via Durban, he added.
