Discussions over future of Swift Handling

DISCUSSIONS ARE still being held on the future of Swift Handling, according to m.d. Greg Cork.

At the height of Safair Freighters' reign, Swift was the main cargo handling independent at Johannesburg nternational Airport. The airline was flying scheduled freighter flights; had the world's largest commercial fleet of the huge-bellied Hercules turbo-prop, freighter aircraft flying inter-continentally and in the sanctions-controlled airspace of Africa; had a shareholding link with the Luxembourg-based Luxavia on the Europe-SA run; and sisterly relations with Flitestar, the country's second-largest jet carrier (to SAA) in its heyday.

But Safair and its siblings were downsized or demised over the years, and Swift itself fell into financial hard-straits recently.

As its financial problems became serious about six months ago, Lufthansa - in the name of its subsidiary, LAGHS (Lufthansa Ground Handling Services) - stepped in and acquired all the shares.

We have to see what we can do with this position, Cork told FTW.

Although inter-continental talks are being held, no further information is available at this time.
