Diesel price drops, petrol rises

Logistics business owners will get some relief at the pumps with the sharp drop in diesel prices, but motorists will have to pay more for petrol from Wednesday, 3 May.

According to the Central Energy Fund's (CEF) fuel price adjustments, the price of 0.05% sulphur diesel drops 74 cents per litre, and the price of 0.005% sulphur diesel by 47 cents p/l,

But the price of both LRP and ULP petrol rises by 37c p/l.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin increases by 33c p/litre, while the price of LPG gas declines by R4.44 p/kg.

Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, announced in his budget speech that the General Fuel Levy (Carbon Levy) will be increased by R1.0 p/l in the petrol and diesel price structures.

The CEF noted that this 1.0p/l had been added to the price from April 2023 but will be removed with effect from 7 June.

However, the fuel levy will increase to R3.96 p/l and R3.82 p/l respectively in the price structure of both petrol and diesel from 3 May.

The average international prices for petrol increased, while the cost of diesel and illuminating paraffin decreased during the period under review, the CEF said.

"The rand appreciated against the US dollar during the period under review, on average, when compared to the previous period.

The average rand/US dollar exchange rate for the period 31 March to 25 April was R18.13 compared to R18.30 during the previous period," the CEF said.

This led to a lower contribution to the basic fuel prices on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by R12.25 p/l, R11.52 p/l and R11.62 p/l respectively.
