Customs approves measures to speed transit traffic through Walvis

Leonard Neill SPECIAL CUSTOMS procedures for container traffic moving in transit through Walvis Bay harbour have been designed and approved by Namibia's Commissioner for Customs and Excise. This includes the registration of a general bond of R250 000, the exclusive use of a special transit code and improved communication between the customs offices at entry and exit. This is designed to facilitate speedy movement of containers in and out of the harbour, with no duties levied among members of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) member nations. A common external tariff applies to imports from outside SACU. To activate these regulations speedily, customs officers undergo extensive training through in-house courses.
