Technology is clearly getting the better of some criminal syndicates – as a recent hijacking recovery demonstrated. According to Johan Robinson of CPI Risk Management Solutions, two containers hijacked in Durban last week were found a day later in City Deep – their contents intact. And it’s all thanks to the container locks, fitted with satellite tracking units that not only prevented pilferage but enabled the security company to track them down almost immediately. “The two containers, which were being transported on an Interlink, were hijacked in Tugela, Natal last Monday,” Robinson told FTW. “They were destined for the China City area – but when our control room realised through the tracking device that they were not moving in the right direction, they tried, without success, to make contact with the driver. “We realised at this stage that there was something unusual going on and responded immediately. On our way there the driver phoned to say he had been separated from the containers, that he had had a call from the hijackers and had in fact been hijacked.” The horse – and driver – were subsequently found two kilometres away from the containers. “The driver was badly shaken up and at this stage we don’t suspect that he was involved. “For us another job well done,” said Robinson.
