Associates (GMA) –
launched in April last
year – has saved one of
its biggest project clients
a total of R200 million
on its original logistics
budget.
So said company
MD Lars Greiner at an
industry networking
session in Johannesburg
last week, referring to the
R3.1-billion St Helena
Airport project under
construction by Basil
Read. “As a logistics
management consultancy
we serve to fill the gap
between project owners,
suppliers and transport
service providers, finding
innovative ways of
delivering the most costeffective
logistics solution
while keeping the project
on track in terms of
timing,” he commented.
The St Helena airport
project is on schedule for
completion in 2016.
Greiner added that to
date GMA had also saved
over R900 000 on
logistics costs for the
MetroWind Van Stadens
wind farm in Port
Elizabeth. “There is a
common misperception
amongst project owners
that having goods/project
supplies delivered by a
logistics supplier passes
the risk onto that supplier.
In actual fact they are
giving that third party
operator control over the
costs as well as the speed
at which the delivery takes
place, which ultimately
impacts the timing of the
completion of the project,”
he said.
According to Greiner,
GMA’s logistics support
service reclaims some of
that control on behalf
of the project owner,
mitigating the risks of
delays and excessive costs.
