Construction work begins at Coega

THE LONG awaited start to the Coega port is due to get underway within the next few weeks, according to the Coega Development Corporation (CDC).
On a recent visit to
the site FTW was advised that roadworks connecting an old quarry with the
site of the port were scheduled to begin early in 2001.
Stone from this quarry will be used to build two breakwaters, one on the north-easterly aspect of 2km in length and the opposite about 1km.
This will become the first manifestation of the long awaited and somewhat controversial deep water port, in which Portnet has pledged R1,65 billion
and P&O Nedlloyd/TCI Infrastructure Corporation has agreed to build a container terminal with capacity for 500 000 TEUs. The concession is due to be signed by Portnet's Port Authority Division and P&ON/TCI in April.
Tenders for building the port are to be advertised this month (January) with a 30 month construction window. The port is scheduled for commissioning in December 2003.
According to the present plan, the port will consist of two container berths, two bulk cargo berths and one liquid cargo berth.
