P&O NEDLLOYD Logistics has come up with an innovative solution to the problem of high transport costs for smaller wine export consignments. Its buyer's consolidation service allows small lots to be consolidated with larger shipments, significantly reducing costs. "Retailers often buy smaller volumes to reduce stock levels," says logistics manager, Reinier van Vuure, "but this can lead to onerous transport costs. "Sending one pallet of wine to Germany can be three times as expensive as sending 10 pallets at the same time," says Van Vuure. "By providing buyer's consolidation services the additional transport costs of ordering a single pallet can be reduced to just the leg from the exporter to one of our consolidation centres, cutting additional costs from 300% to as little as 2.5%," he said.
