Training is a vital factor in ensuring the future health of the freight industry, according to Arnold Garber, chairman of freight system and software specialists, Compu-Clearing. “We have always recognised the value of training,” he told FTW. “Indeed, so much so that there is a possibility of us acquiring an existing training school.” The prospective purchase, Garber added, is currently offering training in customs clearing and freight forwarding. “But we want to get involved as a business strategy, and intend to acquire and expand the school’s present offerings by including business acumen and information technology (IT) training.” Garber also told FTW that he viewed the scheme – in which all training will be done on Compu-Clearing software – as a “holistic” approach. The intended acquisition by Compu- Clearing is in a market-place which Garber described as “pretty fragmented”. “There are a large number of these training schools, but none of them with any real dominance,” he said. “With our experience and financial resources, we could make quite a difference for the industry.” Garber repeated that he saw the move as a strategic tool. “We want to help the industry,” he said, “and the more people around who are trained the better.”
