Complexity of compliance challenges industry

The ability to integrate seamlessly with the systems used across the perishables supply chain has become increasingly important in the current logistics environment, both for planning seasonal export volumes and for managing disruptions during inspections and documentation processes. According to Michael Henning, general manager at Easy Clear, improved system integration is helping exporters forecast demand more accurately while also reducing delays linked to pallet inspections, booking procedures and certification requirements. Automation of certificate processing, export notifications and addenda are also playing a growing role in speeding up documentation flows, ultimately supporting vessel and container bookings and improving overall shipment reliability. “Real-time data is crucial, particularly because perishable goods are highly sensitive to temperature risk and have a limited shelf life that can mean the difference between success and failure,” he told Freight News. “Visibility allows exporters to decide whether to continue with shipment, divert to another market, send product for juicing or sell locally.” Henning said one of the biggest challenges in the perishables environment was the complexity of compliance and the need to integrate with multiple regulatory bodies. “For us as a software provider, a significant learning curve has been understanding the industry itself, the compliance requirements and how systems connect with the relevant authorities,” he said. Because of this regulatory exposure, technology is increasingly being used not only to improve efficiency but also to reduce risk. “Perishables supply chains are highly exposed to disruption. Technology helps operators remain compliant by validating that products meet regulatory requirements, while visibility enables earlier decision-making and reduces delays,” Henning added. Looking ahead, he said the industry would benefit from a single integrated platform able to track product status from the grower through the packhouse and cold store to container loading and vessel shipment.
