Competition launched to gain a ‘grain’ of true value

Grain SA yesterday launched a National Yield Competition for 2020 to expose companies and grain producers to new technologies and production practices, and to provide a platform for them to learn from fellow producers with a view to maximising yields.

Speaking at the launch, GrainSA CEO Jannie de Villiers said he understood the importance of having a diverse group of participants to learn from.

“Grain SA is committed to promoting the efficiency and sustainability of grain producers. In an environment with unpredictable production conditions and markets, innovative practices to deliver higher yields for producers can be invaluable. And what better opportunity for producers than to learn from their peers,” said De Villiers.

In partnership with Pioneer Foods and Corteva, Grain SA is attempting to facilitate a competition where the winners of the individual seed companies' regional yield competitions will represent their region in a national showcase to determine the country’s top grain yield in various categories,  including dry and irrigation land.

And according to Dr Dirk Strydom, manager of grain economics & marketing at Grain SA, efficient yield is a vital component of any producer’s profitability.

"Yield is an important component of a grain producer's profitability - along with efficiency - and therefore it is important for producers to learn what can be done and under what circumstances," said Strydom.
