FOLLOWING THE separation of Port Authority and Port Operations into two separate divisions, corporatisation into two separate entities is the next step, according to Andrew Merrifield.
Government will retain control of the Authority division while most of the Operational functions should be privatised. Exceptions are those functions where there is insufficient demand to support more than
one operative. Government also believes that competition between the different ports will not be constructive.
The way forward is spelt out in a fourfold plan:
l To complete the port policy framework and present it to the legislature this year
l Set up a ports regulatory framework
l Corporatise the Port Authority and Port Operations divisions
l Privatise port operations functions that warrant privatisation.
