Class act!

Working with professional designers and architects to see his ideas come to life, Grade 10 learner Marshaan Brink last week demonstrated how creative thinking can transform a retired container into a ‘designer’ classroom. It’s part of a competition launched last year by Safmarine and its retail customer, Woolworths, which gave Grade 10-12 learners in the Western Cape the opportunity to help an under-resourced school by proposing designs for ‘up-cycling’ a shipping container. The new container classroom was handed over to the Vissershok Primary School near Durbanville in the Western Cape last week. Among the practical design elements that swung the judges’ choice was Brink’s suggestion of a dramatic steel roof to prevent the container from getting too hot in summer or too cold in winter, and which also encourages the collection of rain water
