A major clampdown on the import of illegal goods is under way – and Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies has warned importers of sub-standard products that government and its agencies will double their efforts to make sure that unsafe and harmful products are locked out of the market. This was his message during a recent destruction of non-complying goods function hosted by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) in Durban last week. It’s all about ensuring fair competition while protecting consumers and manufacturers, he said. According to NRCS CEO Asogan Moodley, the NRCS has to date confiscated approximately 15 million noncompliant products to the value of R10.2 million. A significant percentage of the products were intercepted at the ports of entry, including sea ports and inland ports.
