THE CYCLONIC rains which fell in SA's north-eastern areas are likely to have a major impact on fruit and vegetable export volumes from the region, according to Hennie Olivier, communications manager of the PPECB (Perishable Products Export Control Board).
While the actual extent of this damage is difficult to assess at this stage, Olivier told FTW, the early indications from PPECB representatives in the area are that there has been serious damage to a variety of crops.
The hardest hit, he added, appear to be the citrus and sub-tropical (especially avocado) crops.
The PPECB has a board meeting today (Friday, March 17), and Olivier expects a more detailed picture to come to hand.
