The automated dock phase 3 of Qingdao port in East China’s Shandong Province officially began operating in December.

It is the first self-built fully automated dock in the country, according to China Media Group.

It has over 200 loading machines which can be operated remotely by workers, and can save 80% of manpower and lift 30% more efficiently compared to a traditional dock, the report said.

China has the world’s largest foreign trade volume and over 90% of the country’s trade is seaborne. It also has the highest number of ports and has expressed its determination to upgrade its ports regarding the use of technology.

The operation of the dock demonstrated a significant breakthrough in China’s dock construction sector, and would further lift Qingdao’s cargo facilitation capacity, according to a report by the local media outlet Qilu Evening News.
