Charity partnership

WHEN DOUWE Helfrich visited the Eastern Cape last year, he was concerned at the lack of furniture and other items in a number of schools operating in disadvantaged communities.
On his return to The Netherlands, Helfrich set about energetically spreading the word and appealing for donations. The Leeuwarden community, including Friesland College, responded and 180 m2, comprising second hand furniture, whiteboards, computers and toys were quickly collected and stored at Friesland College pending the arrival of five Safmarine containers.
Carl Niehaus, South African Ambassador to The Netherlands and Andrew le Roux, Embassy Counsellor, appealed to Safmarine to transport the containers to South Africa. This request was quickly agreed to and the consignment was shipped on S.A. Helderberg last month.
