THERE’S A lot more to cargo risk management than security seals and track and trace. Choosing a service provider with the right credentials in terms of industry know-how and ISO quality systems gets to the heart of the issue, which is really all about ng risk proactively at every stage of the logistics chain, says Cargocare CEO Roland Raath, An understanding of Incoterms when buying or selling goods internationally, for example, is critical, which is why Cargocare believes in educating not only its own staff but also its customers. “Senior executives are intimately involved with the daily flow of cargo, and free client training helps to educate the shipper on all aspects of imports and exports. “We also undertake regular risk analysis studies with regard to choice of carriers, routes and packing methods and offer our clients real time cargo tracking information to keep them in the loop at all times “The cheapest landing cost is not necessarily the most prudent and if the shipper entrusts his consignment to his forwarder on a door to door basis, he shifts responsibility for its safety to the service provider.” Which comes back to Raath’s original contention – choose a forwarder with the right credentials and the rest should be plain sailing.
