Japanese coast guard vessels were this morning still searching for missing crew from the Panama-flagged cargo ship, Jia De, after it floundered in the category 5 storm that slammed into Tokyo harbour when Typhoon Hagibis made landfall on Saturday evening.
The Jia De was anchored at port when it sank, resulting in the death of five of its crew.
Three sailors were saved and four were reported missing, some of whom have since been found.
The super typhoon, which took its named from the word for speed in the Filipino language of Tagalog, is the worst seaborne storm to have struck Japan since 1958.
It caused damage over a large area, triggering a coast-to-coast deluge north of Tokyo and laying waste to Nagano city where Hagibis caused the greatest loss of life.
At last count 35 people had perished by the time the typhoon swept out to sea.
Seventeen people remained missing, feared dead, the Japan Times said.
