Cargo plane crashes in Afghanistan

A cargo plane crashed yesterday (Monday) at the Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, some 60 kilometres north of the capital Kabul, officials said. "A big cargo plane probably belonging to the US troops crashed at the northern part of Bagram airbase," said a police official at the site in Parwan province. The crew were feared dead. The NATO-led military confirmed the incident, saying there was no report of "insurgent activity during the time of the crash." "We can confirm that one civilian cargo plane crashed very shortly after take-off in Bagram airfield," Captain Luca Carniel said. "We are assessing the situation right now." Meanwhile, the Taliban militants claimed that their fighters shot the plane down, saying the attack was part of their spring offensive. SAPA-dpa
