The Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) took delivery of 10 additional haulers to boost its fleet last week.
This follows the recent delivery of 45 new haulers to the Port of Durban, in collaboration with global shipping world leader MSC. This led to Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), working together with another customer, Ocean Network Express shipping line, to ship 10 of the haulers on from Durban to Cape Town.
TPT said the release of the equipment from Durban was a temporary solution that brought CTCT’s fleet to 56 haulers. The terminal is expected to take delivery of 47 new haulers in August.
“This collaboration exemplifies TPT’s approach to best collaborate with customers for the advancement of our operational efficiencies,” said TPT Western Cape managing executive, Oscar Borchards.
“The expansion of our fleet will allow CTCT to increase back-up equipment which will translate to more support for the ship-to-shore cranes that load and offload vessels,” he said.
He said all terminal management efforts are focused on responding to customer demands to offer a superior service.
The technical team is currently installing operational tools suitable for CTCT’s environment. These include vehicle mounted terminal systems, radios and the Navis container management system which ensures flow and a seamless distribution of work within the terminal.
“Since the haulers were received at one of the terminals, very little needs to be done before they are handed over to operations. We are currently ensuring that they are fit for our own operations and expect them to be fully-functional in the next couple of days,” Borchards said.
