Calls for tenders for civil works, the construction of bridges and platforms in order to upgrade the manganese ore line from Hotazel in the Northern Cape to the Ngqura port have been issued by Transet. It plans to move 16m tons of manganese ore a year on the line, with exports going through a new terminal in the Ngqura port. An estimated R26bn will be invested in the upgrading of the railway line, new manganese terminal at Ngqura and associated work. The rail project involves the upgrading or extension of 25 of the existing loops, including Rosmead, on the line between Ngqura and De Aar. Other improvements include the upgrading or construction of access roads and new or altered level crossings and additional signalling. The target for the first exports through the port of Ngqura is October 2019.
