Task team will prepare White Paper on the overhaul of SA's border control laws
GERMAN BORDER policing methods and equipment show how under-resourced South Africa is in this respect, and specialised teams will have to be developed, says home affairs minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Returning from a study tour of German border control and immigration methods, he said South Africa planned to introduce some of the German policies and operations selectively without affecting its own constitutional stipulations.
Unlike most countries, he said, South Africa does not include policing in its home affairs portfolio. The S A National Defence Force recently took over border patrols from the department of safety and security.
Full details of how the new methods will be introduced will be revealed when a task team publishes a White Paper on the overhaul of South Africa's border control laws.
