Busts get unconventional treatment

WHEN THE Department of Arts and Culture was faced with the tricky assignment of getting the bronze busts of three ANC stalwarts from Johannesburg to Robben Island over a weekend - and in tip-top condition - it turned to customised logistics provider, Special Operations Services (SOS).
A wholly owned member of the Fuel logistics group, SOS specialises in unconventional courier methods, and saw to it that the busts of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and the late Oliver Tambo - weighing a collective 320 kilograms - were transported from Sisulu's Linden home to the museum on Robben Island in just under 24 hours.
SOS operations manager Douglas Boake says the package, insured for R55 000 due to the sensitive nature of the contents, could not be delivered via the traditional 'hub and spoke' system as the consignment needed close monitoring.
It was therefore accompanied by an SOS representative every step of the way, bar the flight to Cape Town.
