Bulk carrier awaits its fate off CT

WITH A huff and a puff, figuratively speaking, the giant grounded bulk carrier Ikan Tanda was finally pulled from its rocky bed last Wednesday, six weeks after running aground in horrendous weather due to engine failure.
In a pre-dawn operation salvors Smit Pentow Marine successfully refloated the ship off the quiet hamlet of Scarborough near Cape Town and had the salvage tug Wolraad Woltemade tow it ten miles off-shore.
The Cape Town-bound vessel was fully laden with agricultural chemicals, mainly potassium nitrate, which had first to be disposed of to lighten her before she could be pulled free.
