Ed Richardson TAXES ON fuel have been raised in the 2003 budget. Finance minister Trevor Manuel announced that the general fuel levy on both leaded and unleaded petrol would increase to 101 cents per litre - an increase of three cents per litre on leaded petrol and between 6,2 and 9,2 cents per litre on unleaded petrol. The general fuel levy on diesel will increase by 4 cents to 85 cents per litre, and the Road Accident Fund levy will increase by 3 cents from 18,5 cents per litre to 21,5 cents per litre. “There were no increases in the general fuel levy on diesel and petrol last year. The tax burden on fuel has now fallen from an average of 45% of the pump price in 1998 to approximately 31,4% in 2002/03,” said Manuel. The proposals will raise approximately R642 million in 2003/04 for the National Revenue Fund and an additional R474 million for the Road Accident Fund. These adjustments will take effect from 2 April 2003.
