Brazil has a key role to play in global economic governance, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “It is the largest economy in Latin America and is deeply integrated into the global trade and financial network. Brazil’s future is inextricably linked to global economic prospects,” IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said recently following a visit to the country. But, while the country now enjoys substantial economic stability, Strauss-Kahn noted in a press statement there were risks of possible overheating. “While not too serious at this point, these risks require monitoring, including in the context of strong capital inflows,” he said. In May this year the IMF signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega for a new Joint Regional Training Centre for Latin America. This centre expects to train government officials from all Latin America countries in the areas of macroeconomic management and policies, financial programming, financial and banking sector issues, government finance, and external sector issues and statistics.
