BOTSWANA RAIL has
become the first recipient
of a cross-border safety
permit.
Issued at the weekend
by Transport Minister Jeff
Radebe on behalf of the
Railway Safety Regulator,
it’s in line with South
Africa’s railway safety
legislation, which requires
every railway operator in
South African territory to be
issued with such a permit,
reports BuaNews.
It legalises Botswana
Rail operations between
the Ramatlhabama border
post and Mafikeng, which
includes 10 trains a day in
each direction.
Botswana Rail moves
cement, fuel, coal and
copper daily.
All prospective operators
are legally obliged to apply
for safety permits based on
the successful submission
of their Safety Management
System Reports (SMSR).
