BORDER BEAT: Heavy congestion at Lebombo

Truckers have been warned to brace themselves for heavy congestion at South Africa’s Lebombo border crossing into Mozambique.

According to Mike Fitzmaurice, chief executive of the Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations (Fesarta), the border has seen an increase in volumes, exacerbated by major delays with customs systems on the South African side.

He said the border had seen successive numbers of trucks over the past few weeks and that ultimately the backlog had been caused because freight was not being cleared fast enough.

“There has been a build-up of trucks since the beginning of last week, but by the weekend the number of trucks queuing at the border had increased dramatically,” he said.

“There has been a lot of confusion about what is allowed to go through the bypass into Mozambique. Smaller vehicles are passing the bypass as well, and this is adding to the congestion because smaller vehicles are supposed to go through the main border.”
