BORDER BEAT: Beitbridge congestion – latest

Southern Africa’s cross-border Transit Assistance Bureau (Transist) has heard from a clearing agent that truck transits going north through South Africa’s heavily congested Beitbridge border into Zimbabwe could soon be speeded up.

This has emerged after it was revealed that additional systems and services south of the border were expected to come online soon.

The clearing agent said: “We’ve got some good news. They’re opening a second exit computer and will be using a second exit gate to help speed up the queue.”

Lamentably it’s taken two weeks for the recommendation to add capacity north of the border.

A Transist spokesperson said it was understood that the decision to enhance processes had possibly resulted from a high-level meeting this morning at the SA Revenue Service’s (Sars) head office.

It’s believed that the meeting’s outcome resulted in the decision to do whatever is necessary to embark on accelerated clearing.
