AN EXTRAORDINARY opportunity for exporters to achieve international brand exposure on a massive scale has opened up thanks to South Africa’s bid to bring home the America’s Cup when the regatta is held off Valencia in Spain in 2007. It’s the realisation of a personal dream for industry stalwart Captain Salvatore Sarno whose gut and determination has led to South Africa fielding the first team ever in this prestigious race. Shosholoza, the boat built for the event, will be crewed by a uniquely South African team drawn from street children and youngsters from underprivileged communities via the Izivunguvungu MSC Foundation for Youth. “Sponsored by MSC, the aim of the foundation is to teach street children and youngsters from underprivileged communities valuable life skills through sail training and other outdoor activities,” says Sarno. The financial demands of fielding, training and equipping the team will be carried by a broad base of South African firms who will be called upon to sponsor the overall event. “This is not an MSC challenge. It is a grass roots South African people’s challenge and we need other sponsors on board,” Sarno told FTW. Nedbank, MSC and Business Connexion have already pledged their support, but several opportunities are still available for anyone keen to expose their brand to the massive international audience that the cup attracts. If you are keen to become part of South Africa’s bid to bring home the America’s Cup, contact Captain Sarno on (031) 360 7911.
