RAY SMUTS SPEEDY COMPENSATION to East Cape farmers who lost ostriches due to bird flu will ensure some will once again be able to deliver product to the market within 14 months. The department of agriculture has announced that payment, said to be market-related and reasonable, will be made by September 10 at the latest. Sources within the industry say the domestic demand for ostrich meat has increased since South Africa voluntarily suspended all poultry exports a few weeks back, which has contributed to minimising the estimated R30 million monthly loss.
