THE PORT of Luderitz is set for a major upgrade thanks to a financial injection of some R68-m by the European Investment Bank.
The money is earmarked for the construction of a 300 metre, fully equipped, multi-purpose quay in the port including container handling facilities.
The Luderitz quay construction is part of the Namibian Ports Authority's overall port development programme which includes projects for the port of Walvis Bay. A new container terminal including modern container handling equipment as well as the upgrading of the tanker jetty and the rehabilitation of the Syncrolift is planned at Walvis Bay.
Namport is currently preparing tender documentation and civil works on the projects are scheduled to begin in 1997.
l THE PORT of Walvis Bay will upgrade handling facilities with the acquisition of a Liebherr heavy duty mobile harbour crane, due for delivery in January next year.
The multi-purpose crane will facilitate ship to shore handling of Panamax size vessels, according to Namport's chief executive Capt J-D von der Fecht.
