It may be hard to believe but the Volkswagen Beetle, endearingly referred to as the “Volksie” in South Africa and the “Bug” elsewhere, is still in production – but only just.
Tomorrow the very last model in a long line of iconic pop-cultural cars will become the last Beetle –really – to leave the last remaining manufacturing plant of the little bubble car, situated in Puebla, Mexico, before production of the Beetle finally comes to a halt.
Fondly referred to as the “vochito” (little insect) in the Spanish-speaking country, a “final edition” of 5 961 “carro del pueblo” (car of the people) will be finished before making its way to a warehouse for select shipment across the world.
Most of the final edition Beetles will reportedly make their way to museums.
The news brings to an end the story of a car that was once successfully marketed by the tagline, “think small”, and that has sold almost 22 million units worldwide.
