Be on the alert for embellished CVs

In a job-scarce environment, employers should be on the look-out for fraudulent CVs – particularly when fewer than four in every ten matriculants are likely to find employment, says Debt Rescue CEO Neil Roets.

In the tight-knit freight community the incidence of CV embellishment is slightly lower, says Blue Oak Personnel managing director Richard Raphael. “If companies use recruiters, it is difficult to hide fraudulent qualifications and experience as candidates can be screened and cross-referenced.”

The freight industry takes in a “good number” of matriculants each year, says Raphael, adding that qualifications are company-specific. “However, candidates will not be made an offer until they have undergone a reputable employer protection process which involves cross referencing information with confirmed sources, as well as credit, criminal and qualification checks,” he added.

Kirsten Halcrow, CEO of employee background screening provider EMPS, was quoted by business publication MoneyWeb as saying that, “the majority of CVs that are submitted to us for vetting contain some embellishments ranging from non-existent matric certificates, inflated education  and unfinished degrees to fake degree certificates.”
