KEVIN MAYHEW LUSAKA-BASED Backloads has relocated its Johannesburg liaison office from Olifantsfontein to Isando which is more accessible and more central, says director Alan Mcnab. Commenting on the general market conditions in Zambia, he said the strengthened currency was impacting significantly on trade flows. “There are very few exports apart from minerals as the appreciating kwacha has reduced the normal non-traditional exports such as cotton, tobacco and other agricultural exports due to the now high labour content after the strengthening of the kwacha. These costs have greatly affected the agricultural sector, particularly the small-scale farmers who stand to earn 60% of their projected earnings as they all grow crops whose pricing is dollar-based,” Mcnab explained.
