Auto exports grow 47%

Catalytic converter exports double for two years running Ed Richardson VEHICLE COMPONENT exports grew to R18,5 billion last year, according to the Automotive Industry Export Council. The council says the rand's weakness "assisted" in the strong growth, with 23 out of 31 categories showing increases. Catalytic converters were again the dominant component export, with exports rising from R4,6 to R8,9 billion. National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (Naacam) executive director Clive Williams says catalytic converter exports have doubled every year for the past two years. According to Williams, the local vehicle industry's international trade deficit narrowed from R9,7 billion in 2000 to R8 billion last year on the back of the improved export performance. Major increases were recorded in air conditioners - up from R7.7 million in 2000 to 20.4-million in 2001; axles (R63.4 to R80.8-million); automotive glass (R170.7 to R240.9-million); road wheels and parts (R551.4 to R724.7-million); seat parts and leather covers (R1 926 to R2 391.4 - million); tyres (R681.8 to R780.6-million); and "other components" from R1 715.7 to R2 107 - million.
