Authorities act on overweight aircraft

THE NAMIBIAN airfreight carrier GJ Air has had its Air Operating Certificate suspended by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, following several contraventions relating to overloading.
According to the CAA general manager: safety operations Charles Buxton, the overloading of these aircraft is unacceptable and demonstrates a disregard for aviation safety regulations.
An inspection of two GJ Air aircraft was carried out at Johannesburg International Airport on December 7 last year and both were found to be overweight, says Buxton. As a result CAA stepped up its monitoring of the airline, and a further inspection was conducted on January 19 this year.
Now the CAA has received notification from the Namibian Civil Aviation Authority that during ramp inspections at Eros airport, Windhoek on January 25, three aircraft belonging to GJ Air were found to have exceeded the aircraft maximum certified all up weight.
In the light of this operator's continuing failure to comply with aircraft operating weight requirements, it was decided to suspend the operating certificate, says Buxton.
