On 04 December 2025, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) advised that the “Prohibited and Restricted Imports and Exports List” had been updated so that tariff subheading 9018.50 no longer requires a Letter of Authority from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS).
Tariff subheading 9018.50 reads:
- Chapter 90: Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof
- Tariff Heading 90.18: Instruments and appliances used in medical, surgical, dental or veterinary sciences, including scintigraphic apparatus, other electro-medical apparatus and sight-testing instruments:
- Tariff subheading 9018.50: Other ophthalmic instruments and appliances.
