Department of Labour Employment Standards director Stephen Rathai has announced that the national minimum wage will be reviewed annually on May 1.
The agreed national minimum wage of R20 an hour for major sectors except farm and domestic workers will be implemented on May 1 this year.
Rathai said that the review process would take several factors – such as inflation, cost of living, productivity and impact on small, medium and micro-sized enterprises – into consideration and would promote medium-term targets to reduce wage differentials and alleviate poverty.
“The regulation will include the procedure for exemption, the obligation on employer to consult with the employees or their trade unions and the criteria for evaluating exemptions,” he said.
The Department of Labour was not available for further comment.
