Airfreight wholesaler Air Menzies International (AMI) has announced its plans to relocate to a custom-built facility in Ekurhuleni to meet the increasing demand for its services at OR Tambo International Airport.

The new facility is situated less than a kilometre from the airport and will replace AMI's existing premises at Aviation Park in Pomona.

AMI has scheduled the move for September 2023, with the objective of expanding its capacity, enhancing operational efficiency, and supporting long-term growth in the region.

The new building boasts a spacious 47 500 square-foot warehouse, enabling the introduction of an off-airport airfreight de-group warehouse specifically catering to import customers.

This addition will supplement the wide range of freight services already available in the southern African market, as highlighted in an AMI press release.

To comply with the relevant regulations set by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, including Part 108, which mandates on-site screening, the new facility will be fully compliant from the day of its opening.

Moreover, the building will incorporate solar panels on its roof to generate up to 80% of the facility's electricity requirements. Additionally, the facility will feature electric forklifts, round-the-clock security surveillance, and CCTV systems.

AMI is also investing in upgrading its specialised perishables facility at the airport. These enhancements include expanding capacity and implementing variable temperature control measures.

Jonathan Clark, CEO of AMI, expressed optimism about the company's growth in airfreight services in South Africa, which has driven increased demand from customers.

Clark emphasised that the new building will provide AMI with expanded capacity, modern facilities, and strengthened market positioning. The strategic location of the facility will significantly improve operational efficiency and facilitate the movement of exports and imports to other branches in South Africa, particularly Cape Town, a major source of perishable and temperature-sensitive goods.

AMI's forthcoming move to the new facility marks its second expansion this year, following the establishment of a new facility in Canada in April. SOURCE: Air Cargo News.
